Dalgona Coffee is definitely the drink of 2020. It’s amazing that there are still new things coming through in the coffee world. Coffee has been part of our society for such a huge amount of time and comes in so many variations that its absolutely astounding that still something new can be created and blow the coffee world away.
What is Dalgona coffee and where did it come from?
Dalgona coffee is really quite simple. It’s whipped coffee on cold milk. Thats it! Apparently, it comes from South Korea and has spread throughout the world on social media. Now I don’t have TikTok on my phone but images and videos of how to make them have flooded my Facebook and is all over Instagram.
I love coffee as it is, so with this I just had to have a go. I’m usually really apprehensive about trend food and drinks, but as we’re currently in lockdown I thought what the heck, I’ll try something new.
My Maple Vanilla Dalgona Recipe
I’ve found that the basic recipes out there of equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water whipped and poured over milk is okay but lacks depth. There wasn’t anything that made me think “oh yeah I will definitely have that again!
I’ve experimented with caramel, with chocolate and with ginger syrups, classic things that go with coffee. This version is the one that I will be making time and time again.
This recipe doesn’t add anything completely out of this world but adds balance to this iced coffee drink. I added vanilla been paste to the whipped coffee and maple syrup to my iced milk. As you drink it, the two layers combine and become this beautiful caramel colour and it’s so drinkable. It kind of reminds me of Starbucks Frappuccino mix? Creamy, light, cold and delicious. What more could you want when it’s warm?
One of the things I LOVE about coffee at the best of times is drinking it in glass mugs and watching as the milk and coffee combines as it’s poured in. The shapes and bubbles are just really hypnotic as they swirl around (yes I realise I just revealed way too much about myself). That whole process is really enhanced with Dalgona Coffee. The foamy whipped coffee and milk just start to bubble and play as it sits I the glass. I love it anyway…
So here is my really simple addition to a new classic, but one that works soooo well.
